Textured Crochet Coaster

Crochet a square center in the stitch used by your pattern, add a border and measure the finished piece. The suggested size varies with yarn, hook and tension.

Size
Suggested finished size: about 4.5 × 4.5 in (11.4 × 11.4 cm); size depends on yarn, hook and tension.

Materials

  • Cotton yarn — Choose a yarn with care instructions suitable for its intended use.
  • Small amount of contrast yarn — Optional for the border.

Tools

  • Crochet hook — Use the size specified by your pattern or swatch.
  • Yarn needle — For weaving in ends.
  • Ruler — For checking width and height.

Steps

  1. Choose the stitch and yarn

Select a square stitch pattern and yarn. Check the pattern's gauge and care directions.

  2. Make a gauge sample

Crochet a small swatch in the chosen stitch if the final coaster size matters. Measure it flat without stretching.

  3. Work the center

Chain or begin as the pattern directs, then build the square center. Count rows and check the edges as you go.

  4. Add a border

Work a border around all four sides. Add corner stitches as specified by the pattern so the square stays flat.

  5. Finish and check

Weave in yarn ends and lay the coaster flat. Follow the yarn label's care instructions.

This project plan uses a square center and a simple border. The suggested 4.5 in size is approximate; yarn, hook, stitch and tension affect the finished dimensions. Follow a specific pattern if you need a matched set.

Check gauge

The Craft Yarn Council recommends making a gauge swatch with the yarn, hook and stitch named in the pattern. Measure the sample before starting if the coaster needs to fit a particular surface or match other pieces.

Keep the square flat

Check width and height every few rows. If the edges pull inward or ripple, compare your stitch count with the pattern and check the corner instructions before continuing.

Finish and care

Weave in ends securely. Follow the yarn label for washing and drying; fiber blends can have different care requirements.

This project is a general plan. Materials, dimensions and construction details may need adjustment for your tools and supplies.

Questions

Does a crochet coaster need a gauge swatch?

Make one if its final size matters or you want several coasters to match. Use the same yarn, hook and stitch as the pattern.

Why are the coaster edges curling?

Check the stitch count and corner instructions. Changes in tension or skipped stitches can affect the shape.

Can I use any yarn?

Choose yarn whose care and surface suit the intended use, and check the pattern's recommendations.
