Macramé Key Fob with a Square Knot

Attach cords to a key ring, tie a repeated square-knot pattern and finish the ends. Cord consumption varies, so test one repeat before cutting the full lengths.

Size
Suggested finished length: 4–5 in (10–13 cm), excluding the key ring; adjust to cord and knot tension.

Materials

  • Macramé cord — Use cord thickness suited to the ring and knot pattern.
  • Key ring — Check that the attachment loop fits securely.
  • Scrap cord — For testing knot size and cord consumption.

Tools

  • Scissors — For cutting and trimming the ends.
  • Tape or clipboard — To hold the ring while knotting.
  • Ruler — For setting the desired finished length.

Steps

  1. Make a sample knot

Tie one square knot with the chosen cord. Measure the cord used and the finished knot width.

  2. Cut and attach the cords

Cut working and filler cords based on the sample and chosen fob length. Attach them to the key ring with a secure lark's-head knot.

  3. Tie the pattern

Repeat square knots evenly. Keep the fob straight and check the length against the ring.

  4. Secure the finish

Tie off or wrap the end as planned. Trim the cord only after checking the finished length.

  5. Inspect the ring attachment

Pull gently on the completed fob and check that the cord is secure around the ring before use.

This key fob uses repeated square knots attached to a ring. The suggested finished length is a layout target. Cord type, thickness and knot tension change how much material the pattern consumes.

Test before cutting

Tie one sample knot with scrap cord and note how much cord it uses. Use that sample to plan working and filler lengths. If the chosen pattern includes cord measurements, follow those instructions.

Keep the knots aligned

Hold the ring in place and tighten each knot evenly. Check the sides as the pattern grows; alternating the starting side can keep a repeating square-knot chain centered.

Finish securely

Leave enough cord to tie off or wrap the end. Check the attachment before putting the key fob into use. This design is a general plan; adapt the finish to the cord and ring.

This project is a general plan. Materials, dimensions and construction details may need adjustment for your tools and supplies.

Questions

How long should the cords be for a macramé key fob?

Cord use varies with thickness and knot tension. Test a sample knot or follow a pattern that specifies lengths.

What knot does this key fob use?

The plan uses repeated square knots. Follow a knot diagram if you need a specific tie sequence.

Can I use this with any key ring?

Choose a ring large enough for the attachment knot and check that the finished cord is secured before use.
