Pop-Up Mountain Landscape Card

Build a folded landscape card with a background sky, overlapping mountain panels and a short greeting area. Test the fold mechanism with scrap paper before cutting the final cardstock.

Size
Suggested folded size: 5 × 7 in (12.7 × 17.8 cm); confirm the envelope and material size.

Materials

  • Cardstock for the card base — Choose stock that folds cleanly in a sample.
  • Two or three colors of cardstock — For the mountain layers.
  • Scrap paper — For testing the folds and panel spacing.
  • Adhesive — Use sparingly on the tabs and panel edges.

Tools

  • Ruler and pencil — For marking the fold and panel positions.
  • Scoring tool — Check the cardstock with a sample fold.
  • Scissors or cutting machine — Choose a method suited to the template.

Steps

  1. Choose the folded size

Select an envelope and set the card dimensions. Mark the fold on a scrap-paper base and check that it closes.

  2. Sketch the landscape

Draw a sky panel and three mountain silhouettes. Keep the front panel low enough to reveal the layers behind it.

  3. Plan the pop-up tabs

Add folded tabs or slots to support the landscape panels. Test the mechanism on scrap paper before cutting the final card.

  4. Cut and score

Cut the panels and score the base and tabs. Fold each score line carefully, then dry-fit the layers.

  5. Attach and finish

Glue the support tabs inside the card, check that it opens and closes, then add a short message on the clear panel.

This project is a layout plan for a folded landscape card. The suggested 5 × 7 in size is adjustable; choose the envelope first and test the folds with scrap paper. A specific pop-up template is not included.

Design the scene

Use a sky panel at the back and overlapping mountain silhouettes in front. Keep each edge broad enough to cut and leave a flat area for the message. Contrast the layers with paper color rather than adding small details that may fold poorly.

Test the mechanism

Pop-up tabs determine how far the panels stand when the card opens. Make a plain-paper mock-up before cutting decorative stock. Check that no tab crosses the main fold and that the panels lie flat when the card closes.

Assemble

Score the fold and tabs, attach the panels to their supports, and open the card slowly to check alignment. Let the adhesive set according to its package directions before writing inside.

This project is a general plan. Materials, dimensions and construction details may need adjustment for your tools and supplies.

Questions

Will the card fit any envelope?

No. Check the folded card dimensions against the envelope's usable interior size before cutting.

How many pop-up layers should I use?

Three panels are a starting layout. The card's depth and the fold mechanism determine how many layers will close flat.

Can I use a cutting machine?

Yes, if the template and machine support the material. Test the score and fold operation on a scrap first.
