Before cutting fabric, identify the pattern size, finished measurements and cutting layout. A few minutes with the instructions can prevent an upside-down print, missing seam allowance or piece cut on the wrong grain.
Compare body and finished measurements
Use the pattern’s measurement chart to choose a size, then compare the finished garment measurements with a garment that fits you. The body measurement selects a starting size; the finished measurement includes the room built into the design.
Read the seam allowance note
Check whether seam allowance is included in the pattern pieces. If it is not, add the stated amount around each piece before cutting. Do not add it a second time to pieces that already include it.
Follow the grainline
The grainline arrow shows how each piece should align with the fabric. Fold the fabric and align the pattern as instructed. If a piece is cut on the fold, place its marked edge exactly along the fold so the finished piece opens symmetrically.
Plan print and nap direction
For stripes, checks, directional prints or fabrics with a pile, check the layout before cutting. All pieces may need to face the same direction. Pin or weigh the paper pattern in place and inspect the garment front and back as a complete set.
Make a test piece when fit matters
For a garment or fitted accessory, sew a quick sample or toile in a similar-weight fabric. Check movement and key dimensions before cutting the final fabric. A test in a very different fabric may not predict how the final piece will hang.
Cut and label the pieces
Mark notches, darts and matching points with a method that suits the fabric. Keep pieces labeled until assembly. Transfer only the marks needed for sewing and avoid cutting through the seam line.
